Remediation System Benefit Analysis (RSBA)

Is your plume shrinking because of, or in spite of your remediation system? It is a simple question, yet one that is rarely asked and probably never answered … that is until EarthCon Consultants (EarthCon) developed a patent-pending tool called the Remediation System Benefit Analysis (RSBA).
When clients asked us for ways to help them decrease their environmental reserves, we listened. The result is EarthCon's RSBA tool.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The RSBA tool evaluates the actual benefit that an active groundwater remediation system (e.g. pump and treat) has on the plume size and contaminant mass reduction. RSBA will tell you whether an active system may be considered efficient or inefficient. RSBA will also tell you if it makes sense to modify the operation of your groundwater remediation system to make it more efficient, or better yet, turn it off.
THE BENEFITS
Simply, if you are spending money on an active remediation system, RSBA will tell you whether that money is being well spent. And, in an era of limited financial resources, RSBA can be an effective prioritization tool to identify those projects within your portfolio of remediation sites that are most in need of attention for either a push toward closure/shutdown or alternative evaluations due to operational inefficiencies and high costs.
THE PROOF
SITUATION A pulp and paper manufacturer was seeking a solution for skyrocketing costs of up to $2,500,000 per pound of contaminant for mass removal that appeared to be unacceptably inefficient. The pump and treat remediation system had been operational since the early 1990’s.
RESULTS RSBA demonstrated that natural attenuation was occurring at the site and the plume was actually shrinking in spite of and not because of the operation of the remediation system. This data was presented to the regulatory agency and an agreement was reached to prepare a plan for a phased shut down of the system with periodic monitoring at a greatly reduced cost to our client. The plan was accepted and the net present value of the system operation was reduced by $750,000.
